THE YEAR 2003 IN SUMMARY (NOTABLE WEATHER EVENTS)

·       The year began on a dry & windy note with January seeing little rainfall. I recorded my highest wind gust on the 8th at 2036 with 69.5 km/h on the back of a gusty SW change. 40.0°C was recorded on 3 occasions with the 30th recording 42.0°C.

·       February saw a number of above average min temps with one stretch recording 7 days out of 8 over 20.0°C.

·       March began on a cold start with min temps falling below 10.0°C on 2 of the first 3 days.

·       April saw a lot of rain days with totals under 3 mm, 10 in total

·       May introduced our first taste of winter with several days in a row not reaching 20.0°C. Min temps started dropping noticeably in the last week of the month. Heavy rains in the nearby Williams River catchment areas saw minor flood warnings issued.

·       June was a dry month which also saw my first frost on the 7th with a min temp of 3.1°C and min grass temp of -0.3°C. Several locations on the NSW highlands saw light snow a week into the month, including Canberra, Oberon and the Barrington Tops.

·       July started on a cold note with a low max of 11.7°C recorded on the 2nd with heavy cloud, rain and thunderstorms drenching most of NSW. Within the next 2 to 6 days a high moved across stabilising our weather and allowing min temps to fall dramatically along with the wind. Late in the month saw dry conditions with low dew-point temps and calm conditions around the 28th which saw a near record low min temp with just 0.7°C being recorded.

·       Early August saw a return to those calm and clear conditions which saw min temps once again staying low. Frost was recorded on 4 days early in the month with the grass temperature falling below 0°C on 9 of the first 10 days. The lowest being -4.4°C recorded on the 3rd. Late August saw some warm max temps with the 30th recording 24.3°C.

·       September was a very dry month with only 0.4mm being recorded for the whole month. A strong SW change and later calm conditions saw my record low September min temp broken 2 days in a row. The 28th being 3.7°C and the 29th being 2.5°C.

·       October saw my first 30°C temperature along with some cool min temps sprinkled throughout.

·       November saw a cold dry start to the month. This changed quickly later on with a moist onshore air stream and cool temps bringing significant rain for about a week with the 24th recording 56.6mm.

·       December saw record high temps for x-mass day with 40.4°C and also new years eve with 37.6°C being recorded.
