New Years Day Record Heat
~ Record breaking temperatures were observed throughout much of Eastern NSW. The Hunter recorded it's
highest ever temperature at Singleton with 45.9C. The previous high of 45.6C was held by Jerrys Plains
on 25/12/1957. Unfortunately this station did not record data on this day.
Moderate NW winds carried this heat from NW NSW & SW QLD. It was possible to pick that we were going
to be in for a hot day the night before with the very warn overnight temperatures in higher elevations. For
example, Murrurundi Gap in the NW hunter at 729.4m asl observed a temperature of 27.3C at 2am!!!
~ On a rainfall note for January I noticed that many surrounding areas to us here recorded totals well in excess
of 100mm (some centres even being from the Hunter).
